Good morning everyone. We continue to have a busy week with the gears of fall beginning to turn a little bit faster as we approach September. This means larger contrasts in air masses and the greater risk of severe weather. We also watch this time of season for old, stalled out fronts/troughs along the Gulf of Mexico that can cause travel headaches in terms of heavy showers & thunderstorms.

Today we have the entire appetizer and main course on the menu as we watch the likelihood of severe weather across parts of Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin; along with a trailing cold front down through Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas that could bring some strong to severe storms to those areas as well.

The heaviest storms are likely to stay in the Upper Midwest, with the possibility of widespread damaging winds, very large hail, frequent lightning, and the possibility for tornadoes across Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin later this afternoon into the evening hours. We are expecting severe thunderstorm and/or tornado watches to be issued in regards.

While the heaviest storms are expected to be closest to our low pressure system up north, we have to watch the trailing cold front draped down across Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. We're expecting a narrow line of strong to severe storms to develop with the help of moisture already in place.

Look for that action to continue to fizzle out, re-fire, and/or strengthen as the day wears on. While we don't expect widespread severe weather in this area, we cannot rule it out. At minimum, look for locally severe storms, with large hail, damaging winds, and torrential rain as being the main risk. We also cannot rule out an isolated tornado.

That front will also help draw up that moisture over the Gulf of Mexico, giving the Texas and Louisiana the likelihood of some soaking tropical showers & heavy thunderstorms. The timeline on this is pretty much now along the Texas/Louisiana coastal border, and becoming more widespread in real estate this evening and overnight. Look for the potential of flash flooding in your notoriously flood-prone spots.
