Good afternoon everyone. Severe weather is developing in a long, broken line, ranging from Pennsylvania, all the way back down into parts of Georgia and Alabama.

This is in response to a strong, slow moving cold front and a large contrast in air masses. Cooler and drier air is bumping into warm tropical air and setting off some very heavy storms. The largest concentration right now is in the Appalachian/Mid-Atlantic area in a fairly organized line from central Pennsylvania, West Virgina, down into Kentucky, and soon into Maryland & Virginia.

Some of these storms have had a history of 60mph winds, hail almost to 1 inch in diameter, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and torrential rain. For this reason, the National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 7pm ET in almost all of West Virginia, parts of Pennsylvania, and western Maryland. We expect these watches to be expanded as more storms develop and the line grows in size.

We are also watching scattered strong to severe storms in North Caolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. If you are not in a severe thunderstorm watch area and in an area of activity, you can still see isolated severe weather. Look for locally damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, and the chance of a few tornadoes.
