Polk County Sheriff officers are actively investigating a head-on collision on Sunday afternoon that resulted in the death of a juvenile and left an adult in serious condition.

Deputies were called to the 7400 block of N.W. Fisher Drive in Ankeny near Cottonwood Recreation Area after reports of a two-vehicle accident around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. A preliminary investigation indicated a head-on crash between a northbound and southbound vehicle.

Both occupants of the northbound vehicle were transported by ambulance to area hospitals. While the driver was in serious condition when they were admitted, the juvenile was in critical condition and died after reaching the hospital.

The occupants of the southbound vehicle were treated for minor injuries at the scene and released.

N.W. Fisher Drive in Ankeny is currently closed in both directions just north of the entrance to the Cottonwood Recreational area. Polk County Sheriff Office officials did not release the names of the victims.
