Coach’s Take: New Michigan LB commit Chase Taylor brings ‘athleticism and versatility’

Michigan recently landed one of the more fascinating linebacker prospects in the country in three-star Stockbridge (Ga.) High product Chase Taylor.

While he’s certainly not a rankings star, Taylor has qualities that Michigan usually looks for both on and off the field.

“Some of his biggest strengths are his athleticism and versatility,” said Stockbridge linebackers coach Al Wilson. “He’s a really long kid. He has a high football IQ. He has a high motor. He’s a natural leader. All the kids love him. He comes from a great family. He has great football pedigree. His older brothers all played football at a high level and in college. He has a contagious laugh. He’s one of those kids you love to be around.”

At 6-foot-2 ½, 201 pounds, Taylor was recruited for the WILL spot in Michigan’s defensive scheme. However, new U-M defensive coordinator Wink Martindale left the door open for Taylor to move around.

As Wilson mentioned, versatility is a strength for Taylor.

“I think the WILL is his bread and butter,” Wilson said. “He’ll probably play the WILL better than other positions. He is excellent off the edge if you want to apply some pressure. He’s a quarterback’s worst nightmare in the middle of the field at MIKE with his length and ability to play the ball. He takes away such a large zone.”

Wilson added that Taylor has put in plenty of work this offseason to improve in two areas of his game.

“He took a big step forward with his speed,” Wilson said. “He ran track and tried to compete at a high level. He’s been seeing a trainer to improve his foot speed to get him better for the next level. He understands it’s not going to be the same caliber receivers or tight ends. It’s going to be a little harder to run with those guys, so just speed and footwork.”

Taylor committed to Michigan over fellow finalists Georgia Tech and USC. While he did hold some other major offers, Taylor has flown a bit under the radar and is ranked as a three-star prospect by all four major recruiting services.

However, Wilson believes Taylor is a true gem.

“Part of it is where we are located in Georgia,” Wilson said. “It’s not a state powerhouse. We made the state championship run last year, but a lot of people underestimated little, old Stockbridge. I think it opened some eyes. Also, Chase isn’t a flashy kid. He’s a hard hat, lunch pail type of kid. He’s going to do his job and work hard. Sometimes, that can go under the radar. You can get lost in the shuffle if you’re not talking on social media. If you have your eyes open, you know Chase is a baller. All you have to do is watch.”

Michigan did watch and made him a top priority for the majority of the cycle. And now, he’ll have chance to surprise many in the Maize and Blue.

“I see him fitting in perfect,” Wilson said. “He’s going to be a contributor as soon as he steps on campus. He’s going to keep the team GPA up. He has an opportunity to play at a high level at Michigan and get a shot at the next level. I think Michigan is a great opportunity. Not only are they the defending national champions, but you are also in a position to get a high level education. I know people that bleed blue. I think the fanbase will be able to connect with him, and Chase will be able to connect with them. It’ll turn into a home away from home.”
