Three Michigan football commits move from 3-to-4-star status after On3 rankings update

Michigan football is still building out the 2025 class and has some big targets left on the board. But some of the prospects that the Wolverines already have are moving up in the recruiting rankings, though others are moving down somewhat.

On3 released its 2025 rankings update and with the new rankings, some of the star players — like defensive lineman Nate Marshall and safety Kainoa Winston — moved down, but three players (bolded in the table) moved from three-star status to four-stars. However, that works both ways with Avery Gach and Bobby Kanka — both of whom were at one time four-stars — now both being ranked as three-stars.

Player Pvs. * New * New Rnk

    DL Nate Marshall 4 4 120

    S Kainoa Winston 4 4 103

    QB Carter Smith 4 4 195

    DL Jaylen Williams 3 4 252

    RB Donovan Johnson 4 4 298

    OT Avery Gach 4 3 –

    WR Jacob Washington 3 4 246

    EDGE Julius Holly 4 4 228

    RB Jasper Parker 3 4 185

    DL Bobby Kanka 4 3 –

    C Kaden Strayhorn 3 3 –

    TE Eli Owens 3 3 –

    LB Chase Taylor 3 3 –

Williams’ update is somewhat expected as now his On3 ranking is commensurate with the other recruiting services. With Washington moving up, the prospects at wide receiver appear to be greater, as the Wolverines are still in the lead with four-star Andrew Marsh. Washington was rated a four-star elsewhere so this isn’t out of the blue.

With Parker, it’s interesting given that he was pretty far down the recruiting rankings until his performance at the Rivals Five-Star Camp. Now, along with running back Donovan Johnson falling after having torn his ACL, Parker is rated a good 100 spots ahead of the formerly highly-rated tailback from IMG Academy.

As far as targets and other recruits, the loss of cornerback Shamari Earls to Georgia will hit hard as he’s now No. 19 overall while wide receiver Quincy Porter — who pledged to Ohio State — is also in five-star range at No. 27 overall.

Michigan is in the thick of it with five-star OT Andrew Babalola, who moved up even more to No. 14. Tight end Andrew Olesh, making his pledge on Monday evening, is now No. 67 overall. A five-star elsewhere, wide receiver target Derek Meadows is now No. 115 overall. Safety target Jordan Young is No. 129. Safety Ivan Taylor, the Notre Dame commit expected to flip to Michigan, is No. 132. WR target Andrew Marsh is No. 167. And IMG Academy linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng saw a massive drop to No. 275.
