Rating The 2024 Michigan Wolverines' Quarterback Room

    By Nick Meyer,

Michigan football has one of the toughest schedules in the country this season with Texas coming to town in Week Two and four Pac-12 teams scheduled to enter the Big Ten Conference.

The Wolverines have one of the most complete teams in the nation but quarterback is a concern, especially since projected starter Alex Orji did not throw a pass last season.

Orji is a former four-star out of Sachse, Texas, who has shown that the coaching staff trusts him enough to play key snaps on designed running plays in big games.

Orji completed about 50 percent of his passes in high school and has only thrown one non-Spring Game pass in his Michigan career, highlighting further concern about the position. He was compared to Jalen Milroe by Jim Harbaugh during the lead-up to the Rose Bowl last season, an indicator of the talent and poised demeanor he possesses.

The prediction here is that Orji splits time with Indiana transfer Jack Tuttle, who is currently more proven as a passer and has drawn praise from Head Coach Sherrone Moore.

Tuttle transferred from Indiana football to Ann Arbor for the 2023 season and quietly completed 15-of-17 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown in spot duty.

Transferring from Indiana seemed to work out well for another ex-Hoosier, Michael Penix Jr. of Washington football, the Wolverines' opponent in the national championship game.

Tuttle has been called a "freak athlete" by Coach Moore and is a tall, polished passer with the athleticism to scramble for key yards.

Other contenders for the job including former walk-on Warren Davis, junior Jayden Denegal and freshman Jadyn Davis.

Davis showed out in the spring game and has been efficient and smart with the football whenever his number has been called. Denegal's physicality and tools have been compared to Ben Roethlisberger. Davis is the hot shot freshman who boasts great accuracy and leadership skills.

When the dust settles, expect Orji to take the first snaps in Week One against the Fresno State Bulldogs and for this job to become a quarterback-by-committee situation with Orji and Tuttle splitting snaps.

The Wolverines deserve an overall grade of a B- for this position group. This grade could rise higher once Orji and Tuttle get experience under their belts.

There are bound to be growing pains, but Michigan's quarterback room is packed with smart, mature young players who should be able to manage the offense well, if the running game plays up to its potential this season.
