Michigan basketball coach Dusty May and his staff have been busy on the recruiting trail, making inroads with some of the nation’s top recruits. Several of them have moved U-M near the top of their lists heading toward August, and many have already scheduled official visits.

Here’s a look at some of the class of 2025 standouts with whom May and Co. have the best shot, along with other notes:

    Xavion Staton
    6-11, 210, C
    Las Vegas (Nev.) Sierra Vista
On3 Industry Ranking No. 33 player nationally

Staton has Arizona high on his list and is planning to take his first official visit to the school. His top 5 list has generally included schools out west — UNLV, UCLA, etc. — but now he’s expanding his list, and May and Co. should get a visit along with LSU, Ohio State, and others.

From On3’s Jamie Shaw at the NBPA camp this summer:

“Staton was well on his way to taking the title as top shot blocker in camp before he was injured (undercut on a block attempt) on Saturday. Staton is raw offensively and still developing strength, but his presence and timing around the rim is undeniable and – at times – game-changing.”

Michigan is moving up quickly here. He’ll be one to watch closely.

    Trey McKenney
    6-4, 205, SG
Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary ‘s
    On3 No. 16

McKenney grew up in a Michigan family and rooted for the Wolverines, but Michigan State has prioritized him and has a very good relationship … ditto Georgetown. From Shaw:

“McKenney has had an interesting recruitment. The Flint, MI native has taken several visits already with plenty more planned (Michigan, Michigan State, USC, Oregon, Notre Dame, and Creighton all upcoming). The in-state Spartans have been around since the beginning and have done a good job of making him feel like a priority. Georgetown and Ed Cooley have also made a strong push and have positioned themselves as the current frontrunner.

“One other school I’m keeping an eye on is Michigan, led by new coach Dusty May. McKenney grew up a fan of the Wolverines.”

U-M should have a real shot here.

    Braylon Mullins
    6-4, 180, SG
    Greenfield (Ind.) Central
    On3 No. 26

Per On3, Mullins has set eight official visits, and Michigan is one. The 6-foot-5 guard was set on narrowing his list to a final eight to ten schools after the event ended. With his strong play, Mullins added offers from Arkansas and Duke over the past couple of days.

Mullins told On3 he still plans to sign during the early period, but they write, “with these new offers in hand, the process of elimination may have been pushed back a little. Eight visits is a lot over a couple of month period … however, in speaking with Mullins, he seems set on taking them. Watch to see how the visits play out.”

One writer tells us Mullins always has great things to say about May and Michigan, but he’s got an impressive list. He’ll visit for Texas football weekend Sept. 7. He’ll also see UConn, UNC, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

    Mazi Mosley
    6-4, 165, SG
    Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy
    On3 No. 58

Mosley just transferred by way of St. Francis (Cali.) La Canada Flintridge and has set his first official visit to Michigan — Aug. 31 for the U-M football weekend with Fresno State. May has made significant progress with him, he and his staff giving him plenty of attention on the recruiting trail this summer.

Mosley played well at the June NBAPA top 100 camp, per Shaw.

“Mosley has long carried the reputation as a shooter. Pushing 6-foot-6, he has long arms and played with good balance,” Shaw reported. “The shot was clean off the catch and off the bounce. He was also comfortable getting to spots in the half-court off one or two dribbles. He will need to continue getting more consistent, especially playing off the ball, but the shot-making aspect was intriguing this week.”

    Isaiah Denis
    6-5, 170 PG
    Davidson (N.C.) Day
    On3 No. 82

Denis has taken an unofficial visit to Wake Forest and is expected to see Clemson, Tennessee, N.C. State, and Virginia. He has officials scheduled to Pittsburgh (Aug. 30), Ohio State (Sept. 7) and Michigan (Sept. 21) and is also considering a Mississippi State visit.

“They’ve been watching me since they were at FAU, and then they got the Michigan job,” he said of Dusty May’s staff. “They’ve been reaching out pretty consistently. They told me they were going to watch me closely on the stream at the fourth session (EYBL Kansas City), and after that Coach May offered me and he has really prioritized me.

“I’ve been building a good relationship with them. I’m cool with all the staff there; I talk to Coach May and like three of the assistant coaches. They want to have combo guards with size, and they think my size is great for someone who can play on or off the ball.”

Michigan appears to be pretty strong here.

    Nyk Lewis
    6-1, 190, PG
    Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga
    No. 46

Lewis has scheduled an official visit to Michigan for August 1st-3 rd , and he appears to be wide open. He’s visited Xavier and LSU, while Oklahoma State (old staff) also hosted him on an official. Virginia Tech, Maryland, and Georgetown have all hosted him unofficially.

    From Shaw:

“Nyk Lewis is a paint touch guard. Listed in the 6-1 range, he has long arms with a sturdy base and good balance. Lewis has a crafty handle along with quick-twitch athleticism that gets him to where he wants to go on the court. Not only does he touch the paint on offense, but he also prevents the other team from touching the paint while guarding the point of attack.”

He wants a family-oriented program … and that appears to be a strength of May’s Michigan.

“When I step foot on campus, I want to feel that family presence. Obviously, I’m going to be away from home, so I tell all the coaches that if I’m going to be away from home, I need to feel that family-oriented presence,” he said. “I want to play for a coach that I know is going to be there for me.”

He plans on committing toward the end of October or the beginning of November.”

    Winters Grady
    6-6, 200, SF
    Napa (Cali.) Prolific Prep
    On3 No. 66

Grady knows Michigan assistant Justin Joyner well from the coach’s days at St. Mary’s — he’ll visit Michigan in September, though a date has yet to be set. He’ll see New Mexico Aug. 24, Oklahoma Sept. 21, and Oregon Oct. 12. He holds offers from Oklahoma State, Michigan, West Virginia, New Mexico, Cal, Xavier, Colorado State, Creighton, Virginia Tech, and Arizona State.

Grady was recently a standout at the Pangos All-American camp, according to Shaw:

“Winters Grady is one of the more accomplished shot-makers in this class. The 6-foot-6 wing separated himself this season with Napa (CA) Prolific Prep as a floor-spacing threat. He has [shown] can score in a variety of ways. This weekend, Grady found his spots in the mid-range, as well as showing off his patented three-point stroke. The toughness and positional size are intriguing.”

Grady wants to visit, Creighton, Arizona State, and Michigan in addition to those he’s set, and he’s taken two unofficial visits to Oregon over the last few years.

“As of right now, I’d like to commit in late December or early January,” he said.

Grady is an elite shooter and scorer with a devastatingly effective pull-up game in the mid-range.

    Kareem Stagg
    6-8, 225, PF
    Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy
    On3 No. 120

Stagg will visit Michigan Sept. 4, a week after a Georgia visit — he holds offers from West Virginia, Maryland, Providence, and others after a strong spring and summer. He has a relationship with U-M assistant coach Akeem Miskdeen from the coach’s days at Georgia.

    From Shaw at NBPA Camp:

Kareem Stagg (2025) is a physical presence with a lot of burst. In past viewings, his output has been inconsistent, and the production was fluid here as well. However, he shot the ball well, which makes things intriguing. It will be interesting to see if he continues this trend, with his size, length, and pop, an added jump shot opens up more for Stagg.”

    Oscar Goodman
    6-8 PF
    Centre of Excellence (Australia)
    N/R

Goodman was a top performer at the FIBA U17 World Cup recently in Istanbul, Turkey, where May visited recently. A source close to him told us the 6-8 power forward is extremely high on Michigan — he told another source recently U-M is “one of the main schools in contact” for the class of 2025 standout.

    From Shaw :

    2024 World Cup Stats: 6 games. 15.7 points. 6.0 rebounds. 3.2 assists. 1.7 steals. 0.5 blocks. 49.3% FG. 70.8% FT.

“Instincts — that is what pops for Oscar Goodman. The 6-foot-8 forward always seems to be in a position to make a play,” Shaw wrote. “Goodman is comfortable on the ball and able to dribble, shoot, or pass at the point of attack. He is an instinctive off-ball defender, gathering deflections and cutting angles. And he was a bursty athlete at the rim when he was able to get a head of steam.”
