Why the family aspect of Michigan is ‘amazing’ for 2027 Chicagoland QB Trae Taylor

More Power 4 programs are seeing the ascension of 2027 Mundelein (Ill.) Carmel Catholic quarterback Trae Taylor that Michigan understood back in the summer of last year.

The freshman’s offer list has expanded to over 20 schools, with the Wolverines joining Ohio State, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Miami, Colorado, and others vying for his services. There’s also a consensus from college coaches about his all-around traits.

“It’s not only the arm; it’s about personality and how I think off the field and on the field,” Taylor told The Wolverine earlier this summer. “I’ve had to sit down in front of coaches, go over a play that they taught me, and I have to show them how it’s ran, what we like to run it against, and what they’re looking at. So, not only that but also how I throw the ball. They say they like how I get the ball out fast but they also like how it looks so effortless. When that ball comes out, it’s spinning. Super accurate with ball placement. I could only grow off of that. The goal is to just keep getting better based on what they want to see.”

Michigan has had Taylor visit the most out of any school, which will be 11 times once this weekend arrives and he makes an appearance for the BBQ at The Big House. Ever since Taylor was in middle school, his relationship with prominent personnel in Ann Arbor can be described with one word: Consistent.

“It’s been really good,” Taylor said. “We stay in contact with them. I would say it’s been consistent since my seventh-grade year, which is really impressive for me. It shows that they’re really interested. They’re locked in. That’s the school that I’ve always been keeping in touch with, and I have so many connections there.”

Taylor is very close with wide receiver Semaj Morgan and his parents, the rostered players who were a part of Detroit-based Sound Mind Sound Body, the same organization Taylor is currently with, the quarterbacks, and the coaching staff. All make up Michigan’s cultural highlights from Taylor’s perspective.

“Amazing,” Taylor said. “That’s the one (thing) I can say. Amazing. As far as how they treat people on and off the field. Then, Semaj’s energy and the whole family all together is amazing. From the parents to the kids, it’s just amazing.”

Taylor was last on campus in late March when he watched spring camp practice and the ongoing fight for the starting quarterback job.

“I think it’s definitely a battle,” Taylor said. “A friendly battle, though. There’s no trying to sabotage each other. They want the best for each other in every single way. That’s what I like to see. It’s competition, but it’s friendly competition because they know at the end of the day that they have to come together on Saturdays, and they have to be a team.”

Taylor’s lead recruiter is offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell , who offered the former 13 months ago at a camp. Now that Campbell will serve double duty this season as the sole play-caller and quarterbacks coach, Taylor is excited to monitor how Michigan’s offense looks.

“I’m interested to see how he pulls things together this year,” Taylor said. “It’ll be interesting to see what they do.”

Campbell’s personality and philosophies continue to stand out for Taylor.

“100 percent honesty,” Taylor said. “He’s going to tell you straight up. When I was at (last year’s) barbecue, (he said), ‘Hey, you didn’t have your best day. We could all see.’ But he wasn’t like, ‘Oh, you had an amazing day.’ Not trying to flatter me. He told me straight up. That’s what you like to see out of a coach. Another thing is that he loves competition. He wants to work you. He wants to put you in situations in practice so you could get better because you never know when they’re going to pop up in a game.”

Four months ago, the return trip also allowed Taylor to speak with Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore in-depth. He’ll be given another chance during the barbecue.

“I think that he’s taken over,” Taylor said. “I’m still trying to get to know him a little bit better. But it’s just growing that connection. I think overall, he’s just going to be another (Jim) Harbaugh , and they just have to grow off of that.”

Michigan is the early favorite for Taylor on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Taylor holds other notable offers from Maryland, Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, Indiana, UNC, Iowa, Tulane, and West Virginia. At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, he’s not yet listed on the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four primary recruiting media services.
