New Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore has been immediately tasked with replacing starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy . It’s a competition that has rolled into the summer.

During a recent appearance on The Wolverine , Moore identified the traits that he cares about a quarterback having and the ones that Michigan’s next starting quarterback is going to have.

“He will take care of the football,” Sherrone Moore said . “He will be a team player. He’ll be a playmaker, but he’ll put winning first.”

With August around the corner, the quarterback battle appears to be a fairly open one. Alex Orji returns after being used as a running option at times last season. Then, Jack Tuttle , Jayden Denegal , and Davis Warren come with multiple years of college experience. For his part, Tuttle played four seasons at Indiana .

The Wolverines also have a freshman quarterback, Jadyn Davis . He came to Michigan as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2024 , according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He was the eighth-ranked quarterback in the class.

While at Big Ten Media Days, Sherrone Moore shared an update on what the team is looking for out of those quarterbacks.

“I mean, all those guys have all the attributes you need to be a successful starting quarterback at the University of Michigan and a lot of other universities. And we’re super blessed to have all those guys. Everybody has their own traits and their own things that make them a little different,” Moore said .

“But I think the number one thing we’re looking for out of any guy that is our starting quarterback is one, that they’re a playmaker that they can make plays, that they’ll make the right decision, they’ll take care of the football, and that they want to win and they’ll do anything for the team to win. So really, we’re gonna look for those attributes and then go from there.”

Once the season gets started, Sherrone Moore and Michigan won’t have much time to make their decision at quarterback. In Week 2, the Wolverines welcome the Texas Longhorns to the Big House in a game that Michigan will want to be confident in its starting quarterback for.

Sherrone Moore says there’s no honeymoon for Michigan

Coming off a national championship, major roster turnover, and a coaching change, it might be easy to expect less out of Michigan in 2024. However, Sherrone Moore says there’s not going to be a honeymoon period.

“All those experiences have shaped and helped me to right now to allow me the chance to get this opportunity with this great staff that I have with great players to lead this program. And no, there’s no honeymoon year. We’re just ready to attack. All my life I’ve been a competitor. I’ve wanted to win, and I’ve tried to win everywhere we’ve been. There’s no time off. Let’s take a step back, like that’s not our goal,” Moore said .

“We know what we want to do, we know how we want to attack it and we’re hungrier than ever.”
