Jim Harbaugh's Lawyer Sends Fiery Response to NCAA's Decision Over Michigan's Alleged Recruiting Violations

The NCAA announced Wednesday that former Michigan Wolverines head coach, Jim Harbaugh, that they're slapping him with a four-year "show-cause" order over alleged recruiting violations, per Larry Lage of WXYZX Detroit. This comes just a day after Harbaugh denied any wrongdoing during his time in Michigan.

Harbaugh allegedly went out of his way to contact recruits during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 despite the NCAA's restricted access during that time.

"The NCAA said Harbaugh, who left his alma mater to coach the Los Angeles Chargers after last season's national championship, 'engaged in unethical conduct, failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance and violated head coach responsibility obligations.'"

Soon after the NCAA made its announcement, Harbaugh's lawyer, Tom Mars, took to social media and shared public advice for the now Chargers head coach. Mars compares the NCAA's calling for Harbaugh's suspension to "being in college and getting a letter from your high school saying you've been suspended because you didn't sign the yearbook." Here's Mars' full response .

Michigan has already been fined and face a three-year probation period for the recruiting violation allegations. Lage reports that the probation includes "recruiting limits after reaching a negotiated resolution that was approved by the committee on infractions in the same matter."

Despite that, Harbaugh's lawyer claims that the former Wolverines head coach was not aware of that approval nor was he "invited to participate in the settlement process or aware that an agreement had been reached between the school on the NCAA."

Harbaugh was first hired by Michigan back in 2015 after having a successful stint as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. During his time coaching the Wolverines, the team held an 86-25 record through nine seasons.

The Wolverines finally found mass success in 2021 as Harbaugh coached Michigan to the College Football Playoff. They made the postseason three consecutive years in a row and finally won the National Championship in the 2023-24 season.

Now, Harbaugh is back in the NFL coaching the Justin Herbert and the Chargers. Los Angeles has been a bit of a hot mess for several seasons now but they hope Harbaugh can right the ship. It's expected for LA to utilize a run-heavy approach, similar to what brought Harbaugh success coaching Michigan.

With that said, the veteran head coach may be in a legal battle for several years with the NCAA. But he'll be coaching in the NFL for the unforeseeable future.
