Migrants That Assaulted NYPD Officers Released Without Bail

A senior NYPD official criticized a group of new city immigrants on Wednesday for allegedly beating two police officers in a Midtown attack that was captured on camera, labeling the eight attackers as "cowards" who "should be sitting on Rikers Island."

The argument over the city's immigration dilemma became even more contentious when four of the five young men who had been arrested for the fight outside a migrant shelter on W. 42nd St. near Seventh Ave. on Saturday night were freed without being required to post bail.

“You saw the video. Reprehensible,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell told reporters following the annual State of the NYPD Breakfast at Cipriani 42nd St., about five blocks from where the attack took place. “(They’re) cowards. You have eight people attacking a lieutenant and a cop, running up to them to kick them in the face.”

Just before the fight started at 8:30 p.m., according to police-released security footage, the two officers were attempting to disperse an unruly group outside the Candler Building. As the two officers attempted to place one man under custody, numerous individuals attacked the officers from all directions.

“They were kicking and punching one of the cops,” a security guard in the area told the Daily News Tuesday. “They mobbed [the cops]. It was wild.”

Cops arrested Yorman Reveron, 24, Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel, 19, Wilson Juarez, 21, and Kelvin Servita Arocha, 19, at the scene. A fifth suspect, Jhoan Boada, 22, was apprehended Monday night. All five suspects now face charges of assault on a police officer or attempted assault.

After their arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court, four of the men were set free without bail. Reveron was granted supervised release, meaning he was released but must check in with a social worker prior to his next court date.

“They should be sitting on Rikers, being indicted this week and taken off our streets,” Chell said. “You want to know why our cops are getting assaulted? There are no consequences. We must change this. End of story.”
