NYC African Migrants Falsely Promised Green Cards and Work Visas

In an attempt to attend a hearing on the black experience in the city shelter system, over 1,300 African migrants gathered outside City Hall on Tuesday morning. Some of them believed they would receive work visas or green cards if they showed up, claiming they were told this by a community activist group.

Only about 250 people were allowed inside. The rest, hundreds, had to wait outside in a park. The majority of the green card-seekers were recent arrivals from Guinea in West Africa, according to the New York Post.

The City Council’s Committee of Immigration and Committee on Hospitals held a shared hearing on the experiences of African migrants in shelters. According to a press release, the purpose of the hearing was to “understand how the [Adams] Administration is addressing language access barriers, cultural competency challenges, health needs, and other roadblocks” that the newly arrived Africans face.

No green cards or work visas were distributed.
