Staten Island's West Brighton NYCHA Complex to Get Major Overhaul This Summer

The almost 1,500 residents of the New York City Housing Authority's (NYCHA) West Brighton I and II complexes are projected to experience a significant improvement in their quality of life due to a major planned refurbishment.

Announced last year, the major rehabilitation project would address over $100 million in needed capital repairs, encompassing a total improvement of the complex's common areas, building infrastructure, and apartment units.

New kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, windows, paint, doors, and more will be installed in every apartment. Infrastructural improvements will also include building security, water and plumbing systems, heating and cooling systems, and ventilation.

The project will be finished through NYCHA's Permanent Affordability Commitment Together (PACT) program, the organization's adaptation of the Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) program. HUD established the program so housing authorities could obtain federal funding to ensure and improve affordable housing developments.

Shekina Butler, president of West Brighton Tenant Association said last year, "West Brighton Houses is in desperate need and is long overdue for these comprehensive repairs provided by the PACT program. The quality of life for West Brighton’s residents has declined over the years, and now it’s time to celebrate the upcoming changes. While this has been a long and arduous process, we are thankful for the support of NYCHA and Censere Consulting to have finally chosen the partner team that we feel will best suit the needs of West Brighton residents.”

The renovations will begin this summer, but a specific date has not been announced.
