The Armstrong softball team found its winning ways and stuck to them last week, with two conference wins from three games, beating Totino-Grace and Anoka April 9 and 11 before losing to Champlin Park on April 12.

After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons struck in the bottom of the second. Armstrong loaded the bases with Lexi Madson, Madison Fondow, and Julia Girod after a near-miss run home for Elizabeth Brey resulted in an out. Brianna Dumas came in for Sydney Primmer. Sam Lind then hit a two-RBI single, setting up runs for Madson and Girod. Aubrey McLouden then hit an RBI single to guide Dumas home. Anoka cleaned up the trouble from that point on, but Armstrong now led 3-0 heading into the top of the third.

Armstrong kept Anoka out for another inning, showcasing the defensive abilities of Brianna Dumas in right field, Madson at second base, Primmer at first base, and Peyton Erickson at the pitcher’s mound, where she thrived against the visitors on Thursday.

The top of the fourth brought another brief cameo for Anoka at bat, before Armstrong took over. Fondow scored on an error to make it 4-0, before Dumas nearly scored her second of the day, missing home plate by milliseconds. The Falcons loaded the bases once again, this time with McLouden, Primmer, and Erickson, but did not convert on the opportunity and it remained 4-0 going into the fifth.

Madson and Primmer starred in another quick and dominant defensive performance in the top of the fifth, but the Falcons did fall short of threatening offensively in the bottom of the inning.

It took longer for the Falcons to clean house in the top of the sixth, but they did get the job done. A lightning delay then paused the game at the bottom of the sixth. Play eventually resumed and Armstrong was able to maintain its shutout win over Anoka, the first of the season.

    Totino-Grace

The Falcons began last week with a 16-3 conference win in five innings over Totino-Grace to pick up their first victory of the 2024 season.

Peyton Erickson picked up three runs against the Eagles and also hit 2 RBI. Brey earned four runs, including one home run, and hit four RBI, including one RBI triple.

Madson had three runs, while Primmer and Gabriella Berns each scored two. Berns also had four RBI, including one RBI triple. Girod hit an RBI double, while Fondow and Dumas had two RBI each. McLouden and Ella Cooley each added one run against Totino-Grace.

    Champlin Park

Armstrong concluded the week by hosting Champlin Park on April 12 in a 4-1 loss to adjust the team’s conference record and overall record to 2-2. Despite the loss, the game concluded an opening two weeks of softball with great promise. Armstrong scored 26 runs in four games, while its opposition scored a collective 13.

The Falcons played one game the following week, playing against Centennial in an April 15 away game, after this edition went to press.
