In a promising start for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2024 preseason opener, quarterback Patrick Mahomes executed a precise pass that resulted in a first down for the team.
The unfavorable developments intensified on Saturday evening, bringing more distressing updates.
The recently acquired wide receiver, Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, made an impactful entrance onto the field as he executed an 11-yard catch at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, but unfortunately landed on his shoulder in the process.
Following a collision on the field, Brown exited the field and headed to the locker room, as reported by the television broadcast. Subsequently, the Chiefs announced Brown's status as uncertain for future participation due to a shoulder injury.
Brown did not return.
During the offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs made a significant addition to their roster by welcoming Brown to the team on a one-year contract. Brown brings valuable experience from his two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and initial three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.
Following the match, where the Jaguars secured a 26-13 victory, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid specified to ESPN's Adam Schefter that Brown is diagnosed with a sternoclavicular joint dislocation. Reid also mentioned that there are uncertainties regarding Brown's readiness for the upcoming regular season.
Brown went to a hospital.
In a 2019 game against Jacksonville, Tyreek Hill, a former wide receiver for the Chiefs, experienced a similar injury.
Following the recent game, Rick Burkholder, the current Chiefs trainer, articulated in a formal statement the intricacies of a sternoclavicular joint injury. He emphasized that such an injury involves the clavicle connecting to the sternum and can occur in various locations, including the front, top, or back. Burkholder noted that if the injury shifts to the posterior or back position, it raises concerns for potential medical complexities and further issues that warrant careful attention.
Hill was sidelined for four games due to the injury during the 2019 season.
According to the National Library of Medicine, the injury is characterized as a "complete rupture of all the sternoclavicular and costoclavicular ligaments, typically resulting from a singular, distinct trauma, often associated with incidents like motor vehicle accidents or contact sports such as rugby or American football."
