ANTIGO — Monday night, the City Council Parks, Cemetery, and Recreation Commission voted to award the expansion project of the Springbrook Trail to Musson Brothers Inc.

The Rhinelander-based excavation contractor bid to complete the project for $869,756.33, 80 percent of which will be funded by a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Parks, Recreation, and Cemetery Director Sarah Repp said the final release of the award is contingent on approval by the WisDOT. The project will begin sometime before the end of this year’s construction season.

“Once WisDOT approves it, we’ll be in touch with Musson,” she said. “MSA (previously known as Mid-State Associates) is overseeing the project essentially, so once it gets to Musson by DOT, then Musson should have a pretty good idea of their schedule when they would be able to start.”

The expansion project will extend the Springbrook Trail by several miles. A segment on the east side of the city will begin after the Fred Berner Memorial Walkway, continue north along Charlotte St., and terminate after crossing Highway 64. A segment on the city’s west side will begin on 1st Ave., continue alongside Hogan St., and end at Highway 64, a slight deviation from the original plan.

“Just a boardwalk segment after crossing Highway 64 won’t be completed this year. That still is the plan, but we had to cut it out of the plan for now due to funding,” Repp said.

Repp said she believes the value the trail will have to city residents will be substantial.

“We have so many apartment complexes and so much housing up on the north end of Charlotte, so for people to get down safely to the downtown to parks, to facilities, to schools, this is another way that they can do that safely off-road, so it’s an important connection,” she said. “Also, for anybody that works up on that north side, they have multi-modal transportation options that they can use to get to the north side of town or to come into the north side of town to any of the businesses.”
