ANTIGO — Fourth Ward Alderman Tom Bauknecht was sworn in as the mayor of Antigo at Wednesday night’s city council meeting.

Bauknecht takes over the post from Terry Brand, who resigned roughly two weeks ago, citing his family’s planned move to Summit Lake, as well as health complications being dealt with in the family.

Bauknecht’s term will last until April 2025, when Brand’s was set to expire.

“I’m thrilled, humbled, honored, and I’ll do the best I can for the city,” Bauknecht said following the appointment. “If the past few week’s been any indication, I’ve had all kinds of encouragement, and I’m ready to go. Thank you again.”

City Clerk and Treasurer Kaye Matucheski will be accepting letters of interest until August 6 to temporarily fill Bauknecht’s seat, a position he had held for 14 years, which is now open to any fourth ward residents that are eligible to vote. The ward, roughly speaking, covers an area that ranges north of 5th Ave. and east of Superior St. until North Ave.

Ward 4 candidates must give a presentation at the next common council meeting on August 14 at 6 p.m.

City council members also elected former mayor Bill Brandt as city council president, another role Bauknecht previously held.

“It’s an honor,” Brandt said. “Thank you for your support and trust.”
