A 39-year old man drowned while trying to save his own kids while swimming in the Delaware River on Monday.

The National Park Service rangers and dive team members from the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area responded to the 1:45 p.m. call about the drowning at the Bushkill Access. By 3:07 p.m. crews had recovered the body about 20 to 30 feet from the shore in seven feet of water.

Baruch Ber Ziemba, of Lakewood, New Jersey, was identified as the victim.

Ziemba was on vacation in the Poconos with his wife and seven children, and was out on a boat when two of them began to struggle while swimming in the water, according to news source . He jumped in and got them to safety before being dragged under the water by a wave.

The three beaches within the Delaware Gap National Recreation Area do not have lifeguards and are 'swim at your own risk.'

This is the second drowning in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area this summer. The first occurred on June 29 when a 24-year old man, Jeysson Ariel Osorio-Reyes , of Jackson Township in Ocean County, also drowned while swimming.

The National Park Service advises swimmers to stay within guarded beaches, as the Delaware River often has strong currents, sharp drop-offs, and other conditions that can make the waterway dangerous.
