Exploring West Virginia: Pipestem Resort State Park

    User-posted content

Nestled on the east rim of the stunning Bluestone River Gorge, Pipestem Resort State Park stands as West Virginia’s premier family adventure resort. With a sprawling 4,050-acre landscape straddling the border of Summers and Mercer counties, Pipestem offers a blend of exhilarating outdoor activities, serene natural beauty, and comfortable accommodations, making it a must-visit destination for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike.

    Endless Adventures Await

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Pipestem has something for everyone. The park’s adventure offerings are as diverse as its landscapes. For those looking to take to the skies, the park features exhilarating zipline tours that offer breathtaking views of the gorge. If you prefer to stay closer to the ground, guided trout fishing trips, mountain bike excursions, and nature hikes through the park’s expansive trails await.

Water enthusiasts can spend hours at Pipestem’s new adventure lake and splash park, where fun in the sun is guaranteed. For more aquatic excitement, set out on a kayaking or stand-up paddleboard tour, or brace yourself for a tubing or whitewater adventure on the Bluestone River. Each activity is designed to immerse you in the park’s natural beauty while providing a memorable experience for the entire family.

    Accommodations with a View

After a day of exploration and adventure, unwind in one of Pipestem’s comfortable accommodations. The park boasts 26 cabins and two lodges, each offering unique access to the park’s attractions. The Mountain Creek Lodge, in particular, is an experience all its own. This lodge can only be accessed by riding the park’s aerial tramway, which descends to the bottom of the Bluestone River Gorge—a journey that offers spectacular views and a sense of adventure right from the start.

However, it’s important to note that the Canyon Rim Aerial Tram to Mountain Creek Lodge is currently closed for replacement, with an anticipated reopening date in Autumn 2024. The original tram, which opened in April 1971, served the park and its visitors faithfully for over 50 years. With 12 cabins, each with a capacity for four passengers, the old tram became an iconic part of the Pipestem experience.

The new tram system promises even more safety and reliability, with enhanced safety applications allowing it to operate in winds of up to 54 mph—significantly higher than the 24 mph limit of the previous system. This upgrade will ensure that visitors can continue to enjoy the thrilling ride down into the gorge even on a moderately windy day.

    More Adventures Nearby

If you find yourself craving even more outdoor excitement, Bluestone State Park is just 20 minutes down the road from Pipestem. Located on the banks of Bluestone Lake, this neighboring park offers additional opportunities for boating, fishing, and exploring the scenic beauty of the area.

    Plan Your Visit

Pipestem Resort State Park is the perfect destination for families, adventure seekers, and anyone looking to experience the best of West Virginia’s natural wonders. With its wide range of activities, comfortable lodging, and the upcoming launch of the new aerial tramway, Pipestem is a place where memories are made and adventures are endless. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or an extended stay, Pipestem has everything you need for an unforgettable outdoor adventure.
