Firefighters faced temperatures over 110 degrees as they battled the Cahuilla Fire, which forced sheriff's officials to evacuate an area north of Highway 18 in Apple Valley on Saturday.

The vegetation fire was reported at about 2:41 p.m. in the 24000 block of Cahuilla Road, according to the Apple Valley Fire Protection District.

At about 3:48 p.m. Saturday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department requested the start of evacuations for areas south of Cahuilla Road, west of Laguna Seca Drive, north of Keator Road and east of Joshua Road.

By 4:37 p.m., the fire was marked at 75 acres, with firefighters seen protecting homes and structures near the fire. During that time, evacuations were reduced to a warning, authorities said.

Several dust devils were seen forming and moving across the scorched area, kicking up ash and possibly embers.

Several additional fire agencies were seen at the incident, including the Rancho Cucamonga Fire department and the Bureau of Land Management.
