Parents arrested after 1-year-old treated for fentanyl exposure in Apple Valley

A pair of Apple Valley parents were arrested this week after their 1-year-old child ended up at a hospital due to fentanyl exposure, authorities said.

The couple was taken into custody shortly after noon Monday at their home in the 9600 block of Bowen Ranch Road, in an unincorporated county area just outside Apple Valley, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies made the arrests while conducting follow-up investigation after their child was previously admitted to a local hospital suffering from fentanyl exposure, the sheriff's department said in a written statement .

Investigators said they were able to confirm the exposure occurred at home while with the parents.

The parents, a 27-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, were booked on suspicion of child abuse with the possibility of causing great bodily injury or death, county booking records show.

Sheriff's department spokeswoman Staci Parks said the child has since been released from the hospital and placed in the care of San Bernardino County Children and Family Services.

Bail for the suspect was set at $100,000 each pending legal proceedings.
