RICHLAND, Wash. — Career Day took place at Chief Joseph Middle School Thursday morning. From aviation, to law enforcement, food service, STEM companies and so many more careers, people from all around the community went to chat with the Eagles about different opportunities for their futures.

Apple Valley News Now’s Jessica Jalal and Rylee Fitzgerald were invited to talk with middle schoolers about what it’s like to work in news. Jessica set up a teleprompter program with a real news story for students to try their hand at what it’s like to be on the anchor desk, and Rylee brought out her camera and equipment to explain to students what a reporter’s day looks like.

The students got to learn a lot about many different careers.

We asked a few students why they thought it was important for Chief Joseph middle schoolers to see all of these careers in one place.

“I think it's important because it helps them get a future idea and what they might want to pick for their career. Even if they don't think that that might be a good idea for them, in the end, it could still possibly appear as a good idea,” said 7th grader Tyler Reid. Tyler said his favorite booth at Career Day was the pilot and aviation presentation.

“I think it's actually pretty good for them so they can, like, see what they have in the future. So, they can, like, get a job in the future and know what they want to do,” said 7th grader Ila Weikum. Ila told us she was interested in physical therapy.

“Because it helps them work towards a goal that they want to have or something that will be good for them,” said 8th grader Graycin Rodes. Graycin said he was interested in the Apple Valley News Now Career Day booth, and learning how broadcasting works.

“So, you can just find what you're gonna do, like, when you're older,” said 8th grader RJ Houfmuse. RJ said he enjoyed the landscaping presentation.

“Just to get them ready for life to know what they're, you know they have to do, and it's just it brings a lot of people together, and that's what I like about Chief Jo a lot, how they like to bring the students together and sometimes the families too,” said 8th grader Adrian Urbina. Adrian said he liked both the lawyer’s Career Day discussion, and the law enforcement K9 presentation.

“Because it just, like, it teaches them a lot more just about some different jobs that they may not have heard about and they can be really interested in,” said 8th grader Keely Potts. Keely said her favorite of the day had been the pilot and aviation presentation.

“Because they can think about it in their future. I mean, middle school is to prepare us for high school, in high schools where we're going to prepare for when we actually go find our jobs,” said 8th grader Ruby Slatten. Ruby had an interest in the engineering booth.
