YAKIMA, Wash. — The 61st annual Yakima Parade of Gems Rock & Mineral show kicks off Friday inside the Modern Living Building at State Fair Park in Yakima.

The event features dozens of gem, rock and mineral displays — some available for purchase — but the featured display this year is on petrified wood.

"People should come out this year because we have a wonderful display of petrified wood that belonged to a former club member who passed away and his family donated the collection to Central Washington University," show chairperson Marti Sondgeroth said.

There's gold panning, wire-wrapping, faceting, lapidary, Ellensburg Blue, and trash can volcano demonstrations scheduled throughout the weekend.

Sondgeroth said there will also be hourly door prize drawings, a silent auction, a raffle and an opportunity for kids to make rock animals.

Admission is $2 for students, $7 for adults and kids 12 and under can come in for free with a paid adult. Free parking is available at Gate Five.

Discount coupons for $1 off adult admission can be found at businesses across the city or downloaded here and printed off.

The event will go from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
