Central Washington University Student Explores LGBTQ+ Identity Through Art Exhibit "Cyclical"

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- A Central Washington University student will be opening a BFA Senior Art Exhibition about LGBTQ+ identity and the cyclical nature of history.

CWU student Joshua Collins will be presenting his BFA Senior Exhibit. The exhibit will showcase the intricate nature of emotion in the face of severe adversity.

In "Cyclical", Collins explores the cyclical nature of history, mythology and identity in the contemporary age through psychological landscapes and self-portraiture.

The gallery reception for Cyclical will be Tuesday, April 30, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Gallery 231, Randall Hall is located at 44444 E. Dean Nicholson Blvd in Ellensburg, WA. Parking is free in university lots after 4:30PM.

The exhibit opens April 29 and will lose May 3. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Cycles define the world we live in,” Joshua explained. “We are born, live our lives, then die, returning to the earth as a harvesting ground for new life. Even atoms, the very building blocks of our world, do not die but instead move and morph into new molecules. It is the same with history as humans are doomed to repeat themselves, even in regards to their tragedies, and it is our job as the contemporary population to recognize these steps and take action to prevent the cycle from perpetuating.”

Collins was raised in the suburbs of Seattle and surrounded by the arts. Collins said he was inspired by his own experiences as a Queer, Jewish man and an interest in history came from Medieval Age Re-Enactment he attended with his family.

He also looks at the avant-garde art history, ranging from artists of Gustave Courbet and Anselm Kiefer.

Collins uses paint as a main medium but also draws and text to create mixed media artwork. He uses a process that is process-based and planned by keeping track of how the pain sits and moves on the canvas while reasearching contemporary Queer issues and responding to them through mark-making.

Collins will graduate from CWU in June and plans to attend Montana State University to get a Master of Fine Arts in Paiting.
