    Educational Service District 105 Welcomes Shane Backlund as Incoming Superintendent

    YAKIMA, Wash. -- Educational Service District 105 announced its has appointed a new Superintendent Friday.

    Shane Backlund will be taking over the position of Superintendent July 1, 2024.

    The current superintendent Kevin Chase will be retiring after more than four decades in education.

    ESD105 said Mr. Backlund has earned recognition by the Washington Sate Association of Superintendents in 2018 and 2022 for his service to students and schools in south Central Washington.

    Before joining ESD105 in 2022, Mr. Backlund was the superintendent for the Selah School District for more than 10 years.

    Mr. Backlund was the Deputy Superintendent for ESD105 since 2022.

    “We are confident that Shane is the right person to lead our region." said Gwyn Trull, Chair of the ESD 105 Board of Directors, "Shane is a distinguished leader with a positive record in strategic leadership and operational excellence. He is skilled in relationship building and collaboration. He demonstrates strong problem solving and communication skills. He will lead the ESD 105 community of students, educators, and families with confidence and collaboration into the future.”

    ESD105 said all three interview panels including area school district superintendents, agency leadership and employees supported Mr. Backlund's appointment.
