HERMISTON, Ore. -- Hermiston Family Aquatic Center's "iCan Swim" program is teaching 22 swimmers with disabilities basic aquatic and safety skills.

The iCan Swim program allowed participants to work with 18 volunteers to learn swimming skills and life-saving water safety techniques.

The program lasts five days and gives swimmers the opportunity to attend a 45-minute or 60-minute session each day for each age and skill level.

The program is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Arc of Umatilla County, and Hermiston Parks & Recreation. Additional support is provided by Good Shepherd Health Care System, Hermiston School District, USA Subs, Desert Lanes Family Fun Center, and Greater Hermiston Community Foundation.

“We’re so grateful to the sponsors and volunteers who have made this camp possible and given these participants the opportunity to enjoy the pool while learning important skills,” said Hermiston Parks & Recreation Director Brandon Artz. “These water safety training sessions have become a big part of our programming at the Hermiston Family Aquatic Center and we’re having a great time increasing swimming opportunities for everyone.”
