WALLA WALLA CO., Wash. -- The Walla Walla County Department of Community Health said a case of Pertussis, commonly known as Whooping Cough, has been confirmed in Walla Walla County.

According to WWCDCH an adult was tested and came back with a positive result for B. Pertussis. It was reported the person did not travel outside of the area recently, which may indicate Pertussis spreading around the community.

Officials said 555 cases of Pertussis have been reported in Washington since August 10, 2024. Only 37 cases were reported at this time in 2023.

Health officials said Pertussis is potentially a serious respiratory illness caused by Bordetella Pertussis. The infection is spread through respiratory droplets that come from coughing or sneezing. Infants have a higher chance of serious illness with 1 in 3 cases requiring hospital care.

    Early symptoms include:

    • Common cold-like symptoms
    • Congested or runny nose
    • Low grade fever
    • Mild, occasional cough

As the infection progresses, serious symptoms may include:

    • Difficulty breathing
    • Apnea
    • Sudden, intense and uncontrollable coughing spells (paroxysms)
    • Inspiratory "whoop"

Health officials said these symptoms can last for several weeks after getting sick.

"Pertussis can cause serious and potentially life-threatening complications." WWCDCH said, "Those at higher risk include infants, young children, those who are pregnant, and those with preexisting health conditions, including but not limited to immunocompromising conditions and moderate to severe medically treated asthma."
