WWPD: "The most horrific and emotional case" | Walla Walla man arrested in son's death

    By Morgan Huff,

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Walla Walla Police Department detectives said a man was arrested in connection to the death of his infant son.

Officials said Ramiro Corona Ibarra, 31, of Walla Walla was arrested on suspicion of physically assaulting his son.

Authorities said officers and the Walla Walla Fire Department were dispatched to an address on the west side of Walla Walla on August 15 for reports of a baby who wasn't breathing.

The baby was taken to the hospital but died 12 days later.

"This is by far the most horrific and emotional case any of us have been a part of," Walla Walla Police Department Sergeant Nick Loudermilk said in a press release.

Walla Walla Police Major Crimes detectives were called to the hospital and the home to begin an investigation. The Washington State Patrol Crime Lab assisted in processing evidence.

"T he officers and the paramedics knew that this wasn't just a choking baby, like they typically respond to when babies aren't breathing, that this infant had been assaulted or there was significant trauma," Sergeant Loudermilk said. "I would even venture to say i don't think this is common for even larger cities. i just don't think we hear about this regularly that four month old infants are essentially murdered."

Detectives said requesting assistance from other agencies was necessary due to the nature of the case; As the investigation progressed, officials said they had enough evidence to arrest Ibarra.

Officials said Ibarra was taken into custody three hours after the first call to 911.

According to officials, the baby died on August 27 due to his injuries. Officials said the Walla Walla County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is aware of the infant's death and it will be added to the original report.

A GoFundMe has been set up by the family of the baby to help with medical expenses.
