Ed Kemper, serial killer known as ‘Co-ed Butcher,’ denied parole after not appearing at hearing over gruesome 1970s murders

A prolific serial killer who murdered eight females — including his mother and six students in college or high school — decades ago was denied parole by a California state panel during a hearing he didn’t bother to show up for on Tuesday.

Hulking figure Edmund Kemper, who was dubbed the “Co-Ed Killer,” the “Co-Ed Butcher” and the “Ogre of Aptos,” will remain behind bars for at least another seven years after the 75 year old was convicted of killing his mother, her friend and six female students whose ages ranged between 15 and 23 in Santa Cruz in the 1970s, according to reports.

Kemper, who is 6 feet, 9 inches, didn’t just kill his victims, but depravedly decapitated and dismembered them before he finally called Colorado police and admitted to his crimes.

Santa Cruz County District Attorney Jeff Rosell urged the parole panel on Tuesday to keep Kemper inside the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, according to the East Bay Times.

“We made the argument that he is essentially untreated for all these years,” Rosell said, per the outlet. “That in terms of serial killers, he is one of the most depraved in the country.”

The prosecutor pointed out Kemper didn’t attend his own parole hearing.

“He is essentially blowing this off because he doesn’t care. He doesn’t respect it,” Rosell said, according to KSBW.

Kemper also killed his grandparents when he was just 15 years old, shooting his grandmother during a heated argument inside her kitchen and then shooting his grandfather after he got home later.

He served a stint in a mental hospital as a result of those slayings, the East Bay Times reported.

Kemper’s killing spree of women spanned between 1972 and 1973 before he was taken into custody.

A lawyer who represented Kemper during a 2007 hearing previously said he was content staying locked up.

“His feeling is that he — and this is his belief — no one’s ever going to let him out and he’s just happy, he’s just as happy going about his life in prison,” attorney Scott Currey, told the parole board at the time.

Kemper pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but was convicted and hit with a life sentence.

His last parole hearing was in 2017. His next is set for 2031.
