Man convicted in 1979 cold case killing in Maryland
A Washington, D.C., man has been convicted of first-degree murder and rape in a case that had gone unsolved for decades. In 1979, Vickie Lynn Belk was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and shot to death. Belk, a 28-year-old mother, worked in D.C. and was a resident of Suitland, but her body was discovered miles away in the area of Metropolitan Church Road and Route 227 in Charles County, the sheriff's office said.

Prince William supervisors approve home-based gun shop near Nokesville
The Prince William County Board of County Supervisors approved a special use permit for a home gun manufacturing and selling business near Nokesville on Tuesday. The permit allows for the continuation of an existing business, Mystikos Armament, which changed locations following the owner’s move to a 1.6-acre plot of land in the Brentsville District. The business, owned by Nokesville resident Neal Roddy, was recommended for approval two years ago by the county Planning Commission under a different address.
Khalil Khalilov Arrested for Homicide of Anvar Guliyev, 36
The Metropolitan Police Department is announcing the arrest of a suspect in the fatal stabbing in Northwest. On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at approximately 11:58 a.m., members of the Second District responded to the report of a fight, inside of a parking garage, in the 1800 block of Wisconsin Avenue, Northwest. Officers were later called to a local hospital where they located two victims suffering from apparent stab wounds. The first victim was admitted in critical condition. After all life-saving efforts failed, the second victim was pronounced dead.
Oakton, Hamlet, Highlands among local division diving champs
Four local summer diving teams in the GazetteLeader’s coverage areas won division championships in the Northern Virginia Swimming League. The Oakton Otters, with a 4-1 record, finished first in Division I for the third year in a row. Overall the division crown was the team’s fourth straight, winning Division II in 2021.
