Upon arrival in Fort Worth he was transitioned to fullback and redshirted his first season. Ahead of the 2005 season Coach Gary Patterson moved Phillips to the linebacker position where he’d quickly earn the starting role starting all but one game over the next four seasons. Phillips would lead a dominant Horned Frogs defense that would win the Mountain West in 2005 and would win four consecutive bowl games with two finishes ranked in the Top 10.
