Amish Shah will win the six-way Democratic primary in Arizona's 1st Congressional District and take on U.S. Rep. David Schweikert in November, the AP projects.

The big picture: Shah, a doctor and former state lawmaker, had 24% of the vote as of Thursday night.

    • Andrei Cherny was in second place with 21.3%, followed by Marlene Galán-Woods with 21%.

Why it matters: CD1 is arguably Arizona's most competitive congressional district, and could help determine which party controls the House next year.

Context: Schweikert, a seven-term incumbent, won by just 3,200 votes in 2022.

    • The district includes Scottsdale, along with parts of north and central Phoenix.
