Arizona primary results: Kari Lake wins but hot Congressional races too close to call

Republicans Kari Lake and U.S. Rep. Eli Crane are headed to the general election, but many other federal races in Arizona remain too close to call.

The big picture: Maricopa County results were last updated at 1:15am Wednesday. They do not include an unknown number of mail ballots dropped off at polling sites on Election Day. Those will be tabulated in the days ahead.

CD8: Abe Hamadeh was leading friend-turned-foe Blake Masters 29.8% to 25.3% in the West Valley-based 8th Congressional District .

    • CD8 is heavily Republican, and the primary winner is likely to cruise to victory in the November general election.

CD3: Former Phoenix Council Member Yassamin Ansari was leading in the 3rd Congressional District primary against former state lawmaker Raquel Terán 46.1% to 42.7%.

    • The south and west Phoenix district is overwhelmingly Democratic, so the winner is unlikely to see a competitive general election.

Meanwhile, Amish Shah has the lead in a six-way Democratic primary in the Scottsdale- and Phoenix-based 1st Congressional District with 24% to Andrei Cherny's 21.4%.

    • The winner will face longtime Republican incumbent David Schweikert in the general election.
    • CD1 is highly competitive and is a top pickup opportunity for Democrats.

In rural Arizona, Crane fended off a challenge from Jack Smith in the Republican primary for the 2nd Congressional District.

Between the lines: In the U.S. Senate race, former Fox 10 anchor and 2022 GOP gubernatorial candidate Lake defeated Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, as was widely expected.

    • But Lamb has 39.2% of the vote, despite being an underdog in the race to replace Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema.
    • Lake will face Democratic U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego in the general election.
