It has been a long time since I posted a blog, and I think my prolonged absence has contributed to my inability to write much. For quite a while, my muse seems to be on sabbatical. I’m hoping that this post, which is intended to (I hope) get me back into a writing routine. So here is my excuse(s)–as we all know, excuses always sound good to those who make them.
A hobby that rocks: Self-taught Whately stone carver sculpts whatever inspires him
Around 15 years ago, Frank Popkiewicz was in Aroostook County, Maine, when he found a stone, in a shape that he thought resembled a bear, face down in the Earth. Since finding that stone, Popkiewicz’s interest in stones and rocks has only increased over the years. That stone still sits in Popkiewicz’s storybook-like backyard along with massive wind chimes, a vast green garden, and, of course, stone carvings.

Ricker trustees award $275,000 in scholarships to county graduates
HOULTON, Maine — The Ricker College Board of Trustees held its annual meeting on May 19 at Houlton Regional Hospital with Chair Leigh Cummings presiding. According to Gary Bossie, executive director of the scholarship program, there are currently 137 in-college students receiving scholarships from the board. These are $2,000 scholarships which are renewable annually. The cost to the trustees for the 2024 academic year was $253,000 sent to colleges mostly in New England. All of these students are Aroostook or Washington County high school graduates.
