ASHEVILLE - A super convenience store chain opens; West Asheville eatery reopens in South Asheville; Caribbean-inspired cocktails make menu debut.

Sheetz opens in the Asheville area

The mega gas station-restaurant-convenience store chain, Sheetz, is only a short drive away as the company opens its first Western North Carolina location.

On Aug. 15, Sheetz opened at 5440 Asheville Hwy. in Hendersonville.

Sheetz stores are open 24 hours, 365 days a year.

The location offers drive-thru service and mobile and app food ordering. It has 12 fuel terminals and four truck diesel lanes that truck drivers can access from exit 44 from I-26.

Sheetz serves made-to-order burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, milkshakes, coffee drinks, snacks and more.

The Chicken Sammiez and Burgerz begin at $4.99.

The company, established in 1952 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, reported that it will make charitable donations to regional organizations, MANNA FoodBank and the Special Olympics of North Carolina.

MANNA FoodBank, a nonprofit dedicated to ending food insecurity in 16 counties of WNC, will receive $2,500. Sheetz hosted a food drive for the organization at its grand opening celebration.

The Special Olympics of North Carolina, the regional branch of the national organization that hosts competitive games for individuals with intellectual disabilities, will receive $2,500. Also, Sheetz has extended support through product donations and event volunteers.

    Now serving sandwiches

In February, Asheville Sandwich Company closed at 794 Haywood Road in West Asheville after the business’s lease was not renewed due to property issues.

On Aug. 14, the restaurant officially opened at its new location, 330 Rockwood Road, Suite 103 in Arden.

Asheville Sandwich Company’s menu features items like Cubans, cheesesteaks and Reubens with vegan alternatives like Cauliflower Bahn Mi available. Ice cream and milkshakes are also popular treats. The eatery promotes the expanded beverage lineup.

    Cocktails on tap

Nine Mile, a Caribbean-inspired restaurant, has added cocktails to its menu at its North Asheville location.

Nine Mile, at 233 Montford Ave., has been the only of the business’s three restaurants that hasn’t offered spirited drinks.

This month, two draft cocktails brimming over with island and Asheville vibes were introduced.

Roland‘s Rita is a top-shelf margarita made with Espolon Blanco Tequila, Grand Marnier and Devil’s Foot Sparkling Limeade. It’s finished with fresh orange and lime juice.

It's named in homage to the late Roland Knoll who owned the now-defunct bar, The Lucky Otter, and was a friend of Nine Mile's owner, Aaron Thomas.

Dancing Feet is made with Muddy River Spice Carolina Rum, Devil’s Foot Fuego Ginger Beer, and a splash of guava and lime. Bob Marley's lyrics for "Sun is Shining" inspired the recipe. The name is a nod to the collaboration with Devil’s Foot.

They are exclusively offered at the Montford restaurant. The location does not offer a full bar of spirited drinks but serves wine and in-house brewed craft beer.

The cocktails are sold by the pint. Roland's Rita is $14 and Dancing Feet is $12.

Nine Mile’s hours are 4-9 p.m. Monday -Sunday.

The West Asheville restaurant is at 751 Haywood Road and the South location is at 33 Town Square Blvd. For more, visit ninemileasheville.com and follow @ninemileasheville .
