ASHEVILLE - Flights have been delayed and cancelled at the Asheville Regional Airport as the airports across the world battle an extensive technology outage stemming from an update provided by the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.

Allegiant Airlines has cancelled all flights before noon, Asheville Airport spokesperson Tina Kinsey said, but noted that America, Delta and United were checking passengers onto flights. Kinsey still anticipates "there will be lots of changes throughout the day."

The Asheville Regional Airport has also posted on X stating: "Nationwide Microsoft outage is continuing to affect airlines at AVL. Check status of your flight directly with your airline prior to coming to the airport."

"It's best for passengers to go directly to the airline's website or customer service to determine the status of their specific flight," Kinsey told the Citizen Times.

CrowdStrike's "Falcon Sensor" software is causing Microsoft Windows to crash and display a blue screen, the company had announced in a early July 19 alert sent to its clients.

In a post on X, Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz said the company is "actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts." Kurtz also clarified that the incident is "not a security incident or cyberattack."

"The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website," Kurtz continued in the post.

As the outage continues across the United States, nearly 23,000 delays and over 2,203 flight cancellations have been reported nationwide, according to FlightAware.

    This story will be updated.
