Five things to do in Newton this weekend
With the holiday on a Thursday, there’s a de facto long weekend ahead. But with many people typically out of town for July 4, there aren’t many events happening. But there are a few. Some music, some dancing and a farmers market await you. Or you can stay home and relax. Summer has no rules.
Making Aston Magna Great Again
As Aston Magna Artistic Director for 32 years, I continue to enjoy discovering new repertoire and presenting it with old favorites in mixed thematic programs. This summer’s festival will offer Boston-area concerts at the Allen House in West Newton, on July 11th, 18th, 25th , and on August 1st – all Thursday evenings at 7pm. These programs will repeat in the Berkshires. We will also be offering lectures at 6:15 for ticketholders who want deeper background. Tickets HERE, or at the door.

Fewest ever contested state legislative primaries in Massachusetts
Massachusetts has 33 contested state legislative primaries on September 3, 2024, the fewest since Ballotpedia started tracking in 2010. There are 27 contested Democratic primaries and six contested Republican primaries. For both parties that is below the average from 2010 to 2022. The average number of contested Democratic primaries was 36.9 and the average number of contested Republican primaries was 8.3.
