Eighteen Mile Creek proposed clean up plan, community comments welcome
NEW YORK — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed a new cleanup plan on Friday for a portion of the Eighteen Mile Creek Superfund site in Niagara County. The EPA is asking the public to comment on the plan starting Friday, July 19 until August 19. EPA will host a public meeting at Newfane Townhall located at 2737 Main Street, Newfane, on August 1 at 6 p.m.

Overdose Fatalities Halved: A Beacon of Hope in Chautauqua County
(WNY News Now) – Jamestown, N.Y. – Chautauqua County sees a significant decrease in overdose deaths, showcasing the impact of community efforts and Narcan distribution. Chautauqua County’s Mental Health Association (MHA) celebrated a remarkable achievement at their July recovery luncheon. Executive Director Steven Cobb announced a 50% reduction in fatal overdoses from November 2023 to June 2024 compared to the same period the previous year. This decline, from 48 to 24, highlights the effective use of Narcan, a life-saving medication available for free at MHA.

NEW YORK – A listeria outbreak linked to deli meats has sickened at least seven people in New York. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating over two dozen cases of listeria across 12 states.As of Friday, 28 people have been sickened and hospitalized, with the most cases reported in New York state. Governor Hochul needs to declare a Climate Emergency
On Wednesday, Governor Kathy Hochul stood outside of a church in Rome, NY for a press conference to declare a State of Emergency after the storm system that produced Hurricane Beryl passed through the state and left scars of destruction in communities like the Town of Eden. During the event, she noted the destruction of the roof and steeple behind her were part of a wider path of destruction that hit the city and the surrounding area and tornado warnings were posted from Jamestown to Plattsburgh. Pointing out that her three-year administration had to deal with more historic nature events than probably anybody in history, she added “These extreme weather events are no longer the abnormal.
