Disaster proclamation issued for 5 counties following derecho, tornados
DES MOINES, Iowa — Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation on Tuesday for five counties after tornados and a derecho caused damage on Monday. Bird says Democrats, Republicans differ on public safety
(The Center Square) - Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird called Democrats the party of "defund the police" at a four-minute speech given at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday. "Unfortunately, Democrats like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have made life miserable for law enforcement," Bird said. "They treat police like criminals and criminals like victims. Iowa Department for the Blind director Emily Wharton resigns as she battles kidney cancer
The director of the Iowa Department for the Blind is resigning as she battles kidney cancer, she said Tuesday. Emily Wharton has served as the department's director since 2016. Prior to that, she served as the department's technology director. Wharton, who is blind, also is a former graduate of the department's Iowa Blindness Empowerment and Independence Center.
Area transient with string of alleged thefts strikes again
An area transient that has been arrested numerous times in the last month on various charges has been taken into custody again after an alleged theft of alcohol. According to police, 41-year-old Porscha Curry was inside the CVS Pharmacy on Muscatine Avenue Monday morning and stole an item worth approximately $50. She returned Monday night and took several bottles of alcohol from the shelf. Curry reportedly made no effort to conceal her actions, and walked toward the exit without paying for any of the items.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Members of the nonprofit group Escucha Mi Voz spoke up on the need for affordable housing at Tuesday night's Iowa City Council meeting. They alleged that property owners have come from out of town, bought rental properties, then overcharged for rent. Members said doing this impacts Iowa City's immigrant community the most.

One person flown to the hospital after Charles City auto accident
CHARLES CITY, Iowa – One person was flown to the hospital after a two-vehicle accident Wednesday morning. Charles City Fire Rescue says it was called to the accident south of town around 5:15 am and arrived to find two cars with significant damage. One person was already receiving medical treatment by AMR Ambulance Service. A second person had to be removed from a vehicle using hydraulic spreaders and cutters.
