Johnson County invests millions in affordable housing and housing-support initiatives
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors recently purchased a 15-unit property for $1.7 million to be used for affordable housing units. Muscatine sewer projects delayed because of flooding
A Muscatine sanitary sewer replacement project at 813 East 8th St. has been delayed because of Mississippi River flooding, according to a news release. East 8th Street was scheduled to be closed to traffic between Poplar and Spring streets Monday-Friday, July 15-19, but because of the traffic detour for river flooding, the work has been postponed.

New Pedestrian Law in Iowa City: What You Need to Know About Crosswalk Safety
A new law in Iowa City is shaking up the rules of the road by expanding the definition of “pedestrian.” This narrow definition meant that drivers were only required to yield to people walking, leaving bicyclists, wheelchair users, and other vulnerable road users (VRUs) without legal protection in crosswalks. Under this updated legislation, the term now covers everyone from bike riders and wheelchair users to people pushing strollers, skating, or scootering. In other words, if you’re in a crosswalk, drivers have to yield to you—no exceptions.
Crawford County Memorial Hospital Contributed Over $60 Million To State’s Economy
A study conducted by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) found that Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison has contributed over $60 million to Iowa’s economy in 2023. Iowa hospitals throughout the state invested $21.3 billion, and Crawford County Memorial Hospital made up $63.7 million. Over $30 million stayed in the local community as wages and benefits from employment, $34.4 million to be more precise. The hospital supported 559.2 job opportunities, which makes up 8.5% of all individuals employed throughout Crawford County, are at the hospital. Crawford County Memorial Hospital is also a huge supporter of Denison and surrounding communities, with $2.6 million allocated for charity care to provide necessary health services to individuals who cannot afford it, serving 4.4 thousand individuals through this program. MidAmerican Energy issues update on power outages in Iowa City, Quad Cities, and Des Moines

As of 11:00 p.m., about 40,000 MidAmerican customers are currently without electric service due to tonight’s severe storm outbreak, including more than 31,000 in the Quad Cities metro area, just under 8,500 in the Des Moines metro area and about 90 in the Iowa City area.

One thing that stands out about this year's group is that they come from all walks of life. Freshman Cooper Koch is an Iowa legacy. Chris Tadjo was born in Canada and played for NBA Academy in Mexico City. Seydou Traore is a New York native while Drew Thelwell was born in Florida and played basketball in Kentucky.
Sandfort, Mulvey Named to NABC Honors Court
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Two University of Iowa men’s basketball student-athletes – juniors Payton Sandfort and Riley Mulvey – have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court, it was announced Monday by the NABC. NABC Honors Court honorees include juniors, seniors and graduate students who finished the 2023-24 year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher. The NABC recognizes teams and athletes from all levels of college basketball. More than 2,100 players earned the Honors Court distinction. It is the first career NABC Honors Court accolade for both players.
Cooper Koch explains reason for committing to Hawkeyes
Four-star recruit Cooper Koch explained his reasoning for playing for Iowa after committing to his father's alma mater. J.R. Koch was on the Hawkeye basketball team from 1995-1999 and was selected in the second round of the NBA draft, but also made sure to stay impartial and let his son Cooper make the choice that was right for him according to the incoming freshman.
