    5 things to do this weekend: Local fashion show, Blues & BBQ Fest, summer market and more

    Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of July 5-7.

    Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.

    Rae Gala fashion show

    • WHERE: work. shop (160 Winston Ave. Suite 9)
    • DETAILS: Athens-based designer Zorae Dunn hosts this event featuring fashion from her own Rae Leeor collection as well as work by local designers BYV_Trubb, Seamless Design, Divine9Nine, Enigmatic Living and Yeliak. The show will be followed by a 7 p.m. concert featuring an incredible lineup of Athens hip hop artists.

    Athens Summer Blues & BBQ Fest

    • WHERE: VFW Post 2872 (835 Sunset Dr.)
    • WHEN: Saturday, July 6 at 2 p.m. ($25 admission)
    • DETAILS: One ticket gets you into the BBQ Fest from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the Blues Fest that begins at 7:30 p.m. featuring Nelson Sugaa Shackman, Mr. Smoke, Klay Bankz, Elle Jai and Rico C. The barbecue will be provided by on-site food vendors, and the event will be hosted by Chazz the Boi Wonder.

    Classic City American Music Festival

    • WHERE: The Foundry (295 E. Dougherty St.)
    • WHEN: Saturday, July 6 at 2 p.m. ($15 admission; free for kids age 12 and under)
    • DETAILS: The bands are scheduled to start early at this indoor Americana music festival featuring live sets by MrJordanMrTonks, The Welfare Liners, BorderHop Trio, Packway Handle Trio, Norma Rae and Grassland. This is an all-ages event, and a barbecue menu will be available from The Foundry's kitchen.

    Saturday Storytime

    • WHERE: Athens-Clarke County Library (2025 Baxter St.)
    • WHEN: Saturday, July 6 from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (Free admission)
    • DETAILS: Looking to get the little ones out of the house for awhile? Enjoy the fun, inspiring and air-conditioned environment at the ACC Library's Saturday Storytime session, which is designed for preschool-aged children. In addition to the stories, the program includes songs, movement and more.

    Phoenix Athens Summer Market

    • WHERE: Phoenix Community of Athens (660 W. Broad St.)
    • WHEN: Saturday, July 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Free admission)
    • DETAILS: If you've never heard of Phoenix Community of Athens before, it's a combination local coffeehouse, community space and church gathering place. Their summer market features local vendors and small businesses selling everything from stickers and glass cups to jewelry, paintings, crochet items and more.
