Paul Finebaum Says Expectations Surrounding Major CFB Program Are 'Out Of Control'

Georgia has dominated college football over the past three seasons, including back-to-back CFP national championships in 2021-22. The Bulldogs have won 39 consecutive regular season games and made three straight appearances in the SEC Championship.

Under head coach Kirby Smart, Georgia has reached new heights, and the expectations could not be higher entering the 2024 season. The Bulldogs are the betting favorites to win the national title next season, but ESPN's Paul Finebaum has one concern surrounding the program.

On a recent episode of McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning , Finebaum believes the expectations surrounding the Georgia program are out of control. He noted that Alabama faced a similar problem during Nick Saban's tenure in Tuscaloosa, which added plenty of pressure to compete for national titles each season.

“(Georgia) runs into the problem that a lot of programs, including Alabama, have had, which is that the expectations are simply out of control,” Finebaum said. “Let’s say they don’t win this year and maybe next year things go haywire and the quarterback gets hurt or somebody leaves. They have a very pedestrian 9-3 season, and then fans start to really get edgy. What happens then is the coach goes, ‘What else do I have to do? I’ve won two national championships.'”

The Bulldogs have won 11 or more games in six of the past eight seasons, including three consecutive seasons of 13 wins or more. Alabama is the only team to defeat Georgia in the past three seasons but will face the challenge of replacing legendary head coach Nick Saban in 2024.

Unsurprisingly, the expectations remain high in Athens as Georgia is expected to have one of the most talented rosters in the SEC and the best head coach in college football. The Bulldogs will also be led by quarterback Carson Beck, who is projected to be a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy next season.

Georgia opens the 2024 season against Clemson on Aug. 31 in Atlanta, Georgia. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m./CT on ABC.
