The SEC is already one of the toughest college football conferences in the country, and it didn’t get any easier with the addition of the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners. The two former Big 12 programs aren’t just a couple of new faces in the conference, but they’re also serious contenders for the SEC title.

The Georgia Bulldogs seem to be the overwhelming favorite to win the SEC after claiming the crown two of the past three seasons, but ESPN’s Heather Dinich agreed with Mike Greenberg that the Longhorns are the ‘next ones up in line’ to steal the conference from them.

“Absolutely. They’ve got the depth it’s going to take to contend for a national title,” Dinich said on Get Up. “Sark has that on the offense and defensive sides of the ball.”

That response came after Mike Greenberg asked, “Georgia is the favorite. If not them is it Texas in your mind?”

However, she revealed her number one flaw that the Longhorns will need to fix to give them a real shot of winning the SEC in their first season in the conference.

“They need to get better though at pass defense. That’s still a premium if you want to win the SEC. They ranked 113th in pass defense last year allowing about 250 yards per game,” she said.

Texas allowed more than 400 passing yards in their two season-defining losses in 2023. Dinich believes they could very well contend for the SEC crown if they can improve that phase of the game.
