Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of July 26-28.
Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.
FoxSaid Fest
- WHERE: Athens Cotton Press (149 Oneta St.)
- WHEN: Saturday, July 27 ($15 admission; free for kids age 10 and under)
- DETAILS: Dig folks music? The annual FoxSaid Fest Music & Art Festival is one of the city's finest folk-inspired events, complete with three stages of live music (two of which are indoors and air conditioned), a beer garden, food trucks, art market, kids activities and more. Audition Showcase
- WHERE: work.shop (160 Winston Dr.)
- WHEN: Friday, July 26 at 8 p.m. (Free admission)
- DETAILS: For new artists in the categories of hip hop, R&B and spoken word, Athens musician and promoter Molly'Tu Hott's Audition Showcase is a great way to break into the scene, perform on a stage, and network with some of the city's finest MCs. The event will be hosted by the always entertaining MsSippi Da MicQueen.
Athens Showgirl Cabaret
- WHERE: Hendershot's (237 Prince Ave.)
- WHEN: Friday, July 26 from 9 p.m. to midnight ($5 admission; ages 18 and up only)
- DETAILS: There is nowhere better place in town to be your loudest and proudest self than at an Athens Showgirl Cabaret show, where the colorful and hilarious Kellie Divine presides over a who's-who of local drag artists such as Jenn Sparx, Diego Wolf, Aqua Maureen, Kai Hudson, Freya Diva, Aqua Maureen and more.
Athens Farmers Market
- WHERE: Bishop Park (705 Sunset Dr.)
- WHEN: Saturday, July 27 from 8 a.m. to noon (Free admission)
- DETAILS: Athens' year-round Farmers Market operates on a weekly basis and features goods from more than 40 vendors, including locally-grown produce, eggs, meats, baked goods, and prepared and preserved foods. Not looking for groceries? The market also offers handmade art, fresh flowers and coffee.
Paint & Sip at SoBrewCo
- WHERE: Southern Brewing Company (231 Collins Ind. Blvd.)
- WHEN: Saturday, July 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. ($30 per person; drinks not included)
- DETAILS: Kelly Thomas Jr.'s "Paint Party" event will supply all ticket holders with the necessary supplies and step-by-step instructions for painters to create and take home their own work of art, and Southern Brewing will grant 15% off of each artist's drink tab.
