The WNBA is experiencing a surge in popularity, prompting companies to capitalize on the increasing interest. Even Mattel, a renowned toy manufacturer, is seizing the opportunity to get involved in the action.

On Tuesday, Mattel unveiled a new addition to its iconic Barbie doll line. This latest Barbie doll is modeled after WNBA and Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird. The new doll will be called the " Sue Bird Role Model ."

Bird is one of the best players in WNBA history and is definitely deserving of a product like this, but Mattel may have missed out on a golden opportunity.

Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese is one of the more popular players in the league right now, and she has been dubbed the nickname 'Chi Barbie.' Her nickname in college with the LSU Tigers was similar: 'Bayou Barbie.'

One would think that Barbie and Reese are a match made in heaven, given the nickname. But Mattel went a different direction for the time being.

However, WNBA fans are confused by the decision to choose Bird over Reese for the new Barbie doll and they expressed their opinions online.

Bird played 20 years with the Storm. She won four WNBA championships and was a 13-time All-Star. She was also a two-time NCAA champion with the UConn Huskies.
