Pitbull Signs Deal With FIU, Should Miami Also Look For New Revenue Streams?

Should more college football programs look to make money the way Florida International is going to by cutting a deal with music star Pitbull ?

There are more ways to create financial stability and give credit to the crosstown program that current Miami head coach Mario Cristobal once operated. FIU is doing business with an entertainer to revenue instead of a traditional big business, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

“The FIU board of trustees voted Tuesday to approve a five-year deal to give the name Pitbull Stadium to what's currently known as FIU Stadium.”

The 1.2 million Pitbull is paying is based on him being brought up in Dade County and wanting to do business in his home city. Within itself, that’s loyalty meeting financial stability. He also believes this move could spread, based on his following statement.

“You're going to see that every other university is going to want to do the same thing. But the difference is, we don't do this for propaganda, we do it from the heart. We do it because it's meaningful. We do it because I'm from the crib. I'm 305. I'm from the bottom. This is my backyard.”

Who knows? It’s plausible that the University of Miami comes up with a unique way to create money with an entertainer that does not even involve naming rights on a stadium. Perhaps by way of hosting an event on UM’s campus.

Regardless, the point is Miami and every other school should at least consider new ways to create additional revenue for their athletic departments.

In the meantime, congratulations to FIU and Pitbull for their deal.
