Wink Shares Unexpected Call from Eagles’ QB

In a revelation that has captured the attention of New York Giants fans, former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale shared details of a surprising conversation with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Following the Giants' impressive 27-10 victory over the Eagles in Week 18 last season, Martindale received an unexpected phone call from Hurts seeking advice before the playoffs.
The call came just as Martindale was transitioning to a new role with the Michigan Wolverines after leaving the Giants.

“I’ve been doing this for 40 years,” Martindale said via ESPN, “and it’s the first time I’ve had an opposing quarterback call me up. It shows you what kind of pro he really is. He’s just looking at every angle that he can to get better.”
Hurts wanted to understand how the Giants managed to disrupt the Eagles' high-powered offense. Martindale described the conversation as productive, though it ultimately didn’t help the Eagles avoid a disastrous 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round. This defeat, following a strong 10-1 start to the season, not only ended Philadelphia’s postseason hopes but also reportedly created tension between Hurts and head coach Nick Sirianni.
Martindale explained the root of the Eagles’ struggles late in the season.
“They weren’t committed to the run,” he said. “They weren’t committed to the quarterback runs. They were trying to throw the ball a little too much on early downs, which put them behind the sticks. That’s when defenses can go to work.”
In response to these issues, the Eagles made a significant move by signing Giants' star running back Saquon Barkley to a three-year, $37 million deal, including $26 million guaranteed. Barkley's addition is expected to enhance Philadelphia’s running game, addressing the very weaknesses Martindale identified.
For Giants fans, this turn of events is both intriguing and bittersweet. Seeing a former star player join a division rival is never easy, but it underscores the impact and talent that Giants players bring to the league.
