Report: Jalen Hurts Sought Help With Eagles' Blitz Problem

If there's one thing that became plainly obvious regarding the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 is that the entire offense had no idea how to handle a blitz.

As the team lost six of their final seven games including a 32-9 blowout wild card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quarterback Jalen Hurts searched for answers after being one of the worst signal-callers against the blitz last season.

Who did he turn to? The coach that blitzed more than any other coach in the NFL last season - Wink Martindale.

Martindale has always been known as a blitzing defensive coordinator in the same type of realm like Rex Ryan or famed Eagles coach Jim Johnson. In a report from ESPN Wednesday morning, it showed that the relationship between Martindale and Hurts grew after the former was let go as defensive coordinator from the Giants - a week after beating the Eagles 27-10.

"I've been doing this for 40 years," Martindale told ESPN, now the defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan, "and it's the first time I've had an opposing quarterback call me up. I thought it was pretty cool that the guy called. It shows you what kind of pro he really is. He's just looking at every angle that he can to get better."

While ESPN's report certainly wasn't a glowing piece about Hurts' relationship with the team's head coach, it was an example of how hard the quarterback is willing to work to get better.

Now, it's just a matter of seeing how good the team will become against the blitz in 2024.
