Dak vs. Jerry: Who's Really In Charge of 'Blow It Up' Plan?
By Mike Fisher,
The Dallas Cowboys offseason has been to many a serious head-scratcher. From the lack of free agency dealings to the worrisome lack of progress in extending Dak Prescott or CeeDee Lamb to Jerry Jones speaking his own special language of gibberish, it's all been ...
Quite odd.
We've explained the oddity, however, dating back to February, when we first explained the distinct possibility that the Joneses are preparing to "Blow It Up'' and "Remodel'' after the 2024 season ... thus the reasoning for having so many contracts that expire - presently, from head coach to QB and most everybody in between - at the end of this year.
Most critically, Dak's future beyond 2024 is uncertain. "Lame-Duck Dallas'' is now an overriding theme.
Months ago, our Mike Fisher talked of a private Cowboys plan to "Blow It Up'' after this year. So the concept isn't new. But ...
What if the QB is the one doing the "blowing up''?
And what are the ramifications if he does that?
“If Dak blows it up (by not signing new deal), you've only won two playoff games, you know what? That might be OK,” former NFL head coach Herm Edwards recently said on NFL Live . “Dak might want to leave, too. But you just go draft a quarterback, it's real simple. Go draft your young quarterback and say we're going to start over.
"He's won two playoff games ... This is a quarterback league, you're paid to win playoff games not regular season - playoff games."
Some of Edwards' thoughts have merit. But ..
Dallas' roster is weaker than last season, yet there is still the core group of players that will stop the franchise from having a high enough draft pick to take their next franchise quarterback.
So "just go draft a QB - it's real simple'' ... is nonsense.
Prescott's lack of playoff success could be the reason the Cowboys are hesitant to extend him (is he a $60 million APY player?), but the vision of Dak walking out the door. ... without compensation and without a replacement.
Jerry and Stephen Jones have taken a great deal of heat for not getting this done, and justifiably so in the sense that, simply, it's their job to do so.
But assuming they've made "reasonable'' offers to Prescott ... with him declining them as he gets to be in the conversation as the next "highest-paid player ever'' ... it's on him, too.
Ultimately, if the MVP team leader doesn't want to sign here, it's not just Jerry and Stephen who are "Blowing It Up.'' Dak Prescott himself is also in charge of the implosion.
