Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is eager to showcase his skills during the preseason, despite being held out of the team’s opener against the Houston Texans on Friday. Head coach Mike Tomlin announced that Wilson, along with six other players, will not suit up for the game at Acrisure Stadium. Instead, Justin Fields will get the start at quarterback.

Tomlin emphasized the importance of competition and the weight of in-game performance over practice sessions. "Everything is an audition," Tomlin said . "What happens in a stadium is weighted heavier than what happens in a practice setting because it’s more game-like."

Wilson, who missed the first two weeks of training camp with a calf injury, participated in his first full practice with the first team on Wednesday. Despite the missed reps, Tomlin remains unconcerned about Wilson's readiness. However, Wilson himself is eager to compete and hopes to play in one of the remaining two preseason games.

"I always want to play," Wilson stated . "Any time you get to strap on the pads, it’s a blessing. Being in that stadium for the first time, I can’t wait."

The Steelers are set to host the Buffalo Bills on August 17 and visit the Detroit Lions on August 24. Whether Wilson will play in these games is yet to be determined, but Tomlin has historically valued preseason play for even his most crucial players.

"There’s a component of in-stadium play that you can’t anticipate," Tomlin said . "Somebody always surprises you in a positive way. Somebody always surprises you in a negative way. I’m always open-minded and excited about seeing who they are under those circumstances."

If the competition at quarterback is as open as Tomlin suggests, it’s likely that Wilson will get his chance to compete in the preseason, showcasing his abilities and making his case to be the Steelers' starting quarterback.
